Abstract

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX), of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was contracted by Pond, Inc., of Peachtree Corners, Georgia, to conduct a cultural resources survey for the proposed South Grady Pipeline Project in Grady County, Georgia. The Phase I survey was performed on December 7 and 18, 2018, by Lucinda Freeman under the supervision of Paul D. Jackson, Principal Investigator. The purpose of this study was to determine if any precontact or historic properties exist within the limits of the project area, and if so, to document and assess each based on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria. The lead federal agency for this project is the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The proposed project intends to replace an existing section of 6-inch steel natural gas transmission pipeline through the use of horizontal directional drilling. All construction activities will be completed within the existing pipeline easement, which is situated between the communities of Calvary and Cairo, Georgia. The project area can be found on the 1974 Reno, Georgia, United States Geological Survey (USGS) 7.5’ series topographic quadrangle (Figure 1). Due to the nature of the project, the Area of Potential Effect (APE) was limited to the total area where ground disturbing activities may occur, which includes a linear corridor approximately 1,305 feet (ft) (roughly 398 meters [m]) in length with a width of 40 ft (approximately 12 m), as well as an approximately 401-x-108 ft (roughly 122-x-33 m) rectangular temporary work space area. Total acreage for the project area is approximately 2.1 acres (roughly 0.9 hectares). The linear corridor is situated within the existing pipeline right-of-way (ROW).
