Abstract

The proposed project would consist of the replacement of GDOT Bridge 003-0012-0 on State Route (SR) 64 over the Satilla River approximately 6 miles northeast of Pearson in Atkinson County. The existing 321-foot long bridge, built in 1960, consists of thirteen (13) spans of steel beams on concrete caps with concrete piles. The bridge was designed using an H-15 vehicle, which is below current design standards, and is currently posted for weight restrictions. Due to the structural integrity of the bridge pertaining to the design vehicle, the weight restrictions of the bridge, and the unknown foundation in the substructure, replacement of this 57-year-old bridge is recommended. Due to the length of a detour, an offset alignment for the proposed replacement bridge structure to the west side of the existing bridge to allow traffic to remain on the existing bridge during construction will be evaluated during the development of the design of the project. The existing right-of-way (ROW) is approximately 80 feet. Additional ROW is anticipated to implement the proposed project, but the amount of additional ROW is not known at this time. The total length of the proposed project would be approximately 4 mile.
