Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRSLB- 2876(2), Douglas -County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

This project is the proposed replacement of the existing Liberty Road Bridge over Crawfish Creek in Douglas County. The existing bridge is a 12 foot wide single lane structure, 90 feet in length. This bridge consists of one 50 foot steel truss span and two 20 foot I-Beam spans with angle iron hand rails. The deck construction consists of 2" X 6" oak runners on 2" X 10" oak flooring. The proposed bridge and approaches will be on new alignment. The center line of the new alignment will be 167 feet upstream from the south end of the existing bridge and 208 feet from the north end. The proposed bridge will provide two 12 foot travel lanes, one in each direction. The length of the bridge will be 140 feet and the width will be 30.5 feet from curb to curb. The total length of the project, including the bridge, will be 1800 feet. Approximately three acres of additional right of way will be required.
