Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, projects FR-009-2(72) & (74) and BHF-009(73), Bryan and Chatham Counties have been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The proposed projects would reconstruct and widen U.S.17/ S.R. 25 in Bryan and Chatham Counties. The proposed projects would begin approximately 0.33 mile northeast of I-95 in Bryan County then would extend northeasterly along existing U.S.17/ S.R .25 to the overflow bridge approximately 0.4 mile northeast of the Ogeechee River in Chatham County. In addition, a new parallel bridge would be constructed east of the existing bridge over the Ogeechee River. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire 9.8 mile length of the combined project corridor.
