Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-002-6(60) in Hall County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Project STP-002-6(60) consists of the widening and reconstruction of the intersection of US 129/SR II and Nopone Road to improve sight distance in all directions of this intersection. As of September 13, 1999 the project now proposes to reconstruct the intersection as a four-lane divided signalized intersection. A left tum only lanes have also been added to Jim Hood and Nopone Roads. Required right-of-way has also been increased to a maximum of296 feet and an easement for a temporary detour has been added on the north side of Nopone Road. This project was originally surveyed by GDOT archaeologists in June of 1997 and June of 1998, and the current survey is of additional required right-of-way not covered by the two previous surveys.
