Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRSLB-1 027(1), Chattooga, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in. the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. This is the replacement of a 20 1 x 30 1 bridge on Oak Hill Road over Mosley Springs with a box culvert. The project is 500 feet long and will require a right-of-way of 80 feet centered on the existing 40 foot R/W. A detour is proposed west of the existing bridge. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists end agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer end State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries end methodologice1 approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources are located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is conc1udtd, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archato1ogical resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
