Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments, thereto, project BRZLB-055(5), Chattooga County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any Archaeological resources within the project corridor. The bridge over Little Armuchee Creek on C.R. 326 will be replaced on new location. The project will begin approximately 500 feet west of the existing bridge and will rejoin the southern most western approach 150 feet east of the existing bridge. The northerly western approach will be altered to join the southerly western approach. This new location section will begin 400' east of the existing bridge and will intersect the southerly approach 150' east of the bridge. A 100' corridor was surveyed for the entire project. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the 1nitial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
