Abstract

Project IM-STP-00MS(203), Barrow/Gwinnett Counties: Proposed Bridge Painting; the proposed project consists of the painting of bridges at seventeen locations (see attached list) . Because of the scope of the project, the routine maintenance, through painting, of these bridges, the area of potential effect (APE) for the purposes of Section 106 has been limited to the structures themselves. Therefore, no ground disturbance would be necessary for project implementation. To ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, the updated Georgia Historic Bridge Inventory was checked in an effort to identify historic resources located within the project's APE. Only one of the seventeen bridges to be painted appeared in the historic bridge inventory's database. This database consists of all roadway bridges in the state of Georgia built before 1956. GDOT Bridge # 135-00020D-000.01E (SR 20 over the Chattahoochee River in Gwinnett County), built in 1948, is a ten span continuous steel stringer with standard concrete railings, safety sidewalks, a concrete deck and concrete columns with concrete cap bents. The Georgia Historic Bridge Survey form, which has been attached, notes that this bridge" ... is a late example of this type/design and has no technologically noteworthy features . . . It does not have a historically distinguished setting or context," and therefore has been recommended as not eligible for listing in the National Register.
