Abstract

The subject project consists of the widening and reconstruction of U.S. 17 from north of State Route 204 / Abercorn Street Extension to south of Dean Forest Road, a distance of 3.4 miles. The existing road has a rural section with 24' of pavement and variable width shoulders. The proposed project would widen existing US 17 to four 12' lanes with a 44' depressed median. FR-009-2(78), Chatham County consists of the widening of US 17 from the four lane section just north of SR 204/ Abercorn Street Extension to just south of Dean Forest Road for a distance of approximately 3.4 miles. The existing road has a rural section with 24' of paving and variable width shoulders. The existing bridge over the Little Ogeechee River is 44'x180'. The proposed project would widen the existing US 17 to have a rural section with four 12' lanes with a 44' depressed median, tapering to a S-lane section (four 12' lanes with a 14' flush median) to tie into Project FR-009- 2(68) (currently under construction) south of Hardin Canal. Widening would be primarily on the north side to minimize wetland involvement. Some curb and gutter would be used to reduce right-of-way impacts. A new 38'x200' would be constructed parallel to the existing bridge over the Little Ogeechee River. Median openings are proposed at Cohen St., Larchmont Rad, Unnamed Road (3,400' north of Cottonvale Road and Moose Avenue.
