Abstract

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX) of Mobile, Alabama was contracted by Trileaf Corporation of Maitland, Florida to conduct a Phase I archaeological direct effects survey and a visual effects survey for the proposed Tazewell-A cellular tower in Marion County, Georgia. The Area of Potential Effects (APE) for direct effects includes a proposed 10,000 sq ft lease area with a proposed access road. The access road measures 198.5 ft (60.5 m) in length by 30 ft (9.1 m) in width to connect with GA Highway 141/Country Club Road. The proposed tower will be a monopole and constructed to a height of 199 ft (60.6 m). The total area of the direct effects APE including the lease area and joint access and utility easement amounts to 0.40 acres (0.16 hectares).

Background research and the field survey followed guidelines established under the FCC Programmatic Agreement. No previously recorded archaeological sites are situated within a 0.5-mile radius of the project area, but there are six previously recorded historic resources, four of which are extant. During the course of the field survey portion of this archaeological assessment, no archaeological sites or cultural material were encountered. Resource 360, the old Tazewell School, is eligible for the NRHP under Criterion A, but due to distance and intervening vegetation, and the fact that it faces away from the proposed tower, it will not have an overt physical or visual presence on the resource. Therefore, the proposed tower will have no adverse effect on this resource.

The proposed Tazewell-A cellular tower is expected to have no effect or no adverse effect on any historic or prehistoric resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the NRHP.
