Abstract

Project PRP-928(139), Hall County consists of the replacement of a bridge on Whitehall Road/CR 928 over the North Oconee River. Existing right-of-way is 60 feet; an additional 10 feet of right-of-way would be required to construct a triple 44'x9'x7' concrete culvert; some easements (20-30 feet) would be required north and south of the existing bridge, also. Total project length is 150 feet.

A pedestrian survey with limited shovel testing within the project area failed to identify any archaeological artifacts or deposits. The archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will not affect archaeological resources in or eligible for inclusion in the National Register.
