Abstract

The proposed project consists of improvements to the I-520 / S.R. 56 interchange {see attached map). The existing left turn lane from S.R. 56/Old Savannah Road northbound to I-520 westbound would be replaced with a loop ramp in the southeast quadrant of the interchange. This would require widening along S.R. 56 from just south of Apple Valley Drive to just north of Moore Road for turn lanes, raised medians and sidewalks. The existing diamond ramp in the northwest quadrant would be retained for S. R. 56 southbound to I-520 westbo1md traffic. The new loop ramp and the existing westbound ramp would merge behind a barrier wall running along I-520 westbound mainline traffic. The barrier would then end near the bridge over Louisville Road, allowing the ramp to merge in to I-520 westbound. A new I-52 0 westbound mainline would begin after the S.R. 56 exit ramp and continue to tie with the existing third lane Just after the exit ramp at the S.R. 121 / Peach Orchard Road interchange. The addition of the loop ramp would require the relocation of the existing exit ramp from I- 520 westbound to S.R. 56, which in turn, would require the relocation of Rawley Read and the closing of William Preston Road in this area. There would be some additional right-of-way required in the southeast quadrant of the interchange for the construction of the loop ramp and on the northeast side of I-520 for the construction of the third lane.
