Abstract

ln compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, GDOT Project PM #2298, Heard County, has been surveyed with respect to archeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register or Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project consists or the transfer of surplus property in Heard County owned by the Georgia Department of Transportation that will be placed on the market by the Department's Right-of-Way Office. The surplus property is in a geographic triangle bounded by US 27/SR 100, Pea ridge Road, and US 27/SR I, Land Lots 351 and 360, of the 3rd Land District of Heard County. The parcel is approximately 0.346 acre and was purchased and used as a sediment basin in 2003 for GDOT Project EDS-27(123), Pl No. 362930. An archeological survey (Level 11) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHW A Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
