Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. has completed a Phase I Archaeological Survey of proposed improvements to Mott's Green Plaza, located in Columbus (Muscogee County), Georgia. This undertaking is a partnership between the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the City of Columbus (GDOT PI# 0015287). The survey was conducted for Hecht Burdeshaw Architects, Inc. and Calyx Engineers and Consultants, Inc, who contracted with Southern Research on behalf of the City of Columbus. Mott's Green Plaza is a small city park consisting of approximately 0.53 acres (2144.834 m2) on the north side of the 14th Street Pedestrian Bridge, also known as the Frank Martin Pedestrian Bridge. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) for archaeology includes all ground disturbing activities within Mott's Green Plaza. Mott's Green Plaza is the former location of Muscogee Manufacturing Company's Mill No. 4, which was built in 1904 and demolished in 1997. The northern boundary of the APE is 247.5 ft (75.4 m) long and is represented on the ground by the transition from pavement to grass at the north edge of Mott's Green Plaza. The western boundary is 136.6 ft (41.6 m) and follows, and extends slightly south of, the western foundation wall of Mill No. 4. The southern boundary of the APE extends 100 ft (30 m) east from the southwest corner, then makes a ninety degree turn north for 8 ft, then turns 90 degrees east and extends another 145.6 ft (44-4 m). The eastern boundary is 130-4 ft (39.7 m) and is located approximately halfway between the eastern-most paved area of Mott's Green Plaza and the western wall of the TSYS parking garage.
