Abstract

Environmental Corporation of America (ECA) has completed an Archaeological Assessment for the federal undertaking at the proposed subject site. The proposed undertaking would include replacing an existing 22-foot tall wooden light pole with a 36-foot tall wooden pole with a street light attachment within a 10-foot by 10-foot (3-meter by 3-meter) area. The subject site is located off of Hawthorne Park & Hawthorne Lane, Athens, Clarke County, Georgia. ECA conducted a Phase I Archaeological Assessment of the Area of Potential Effects (APE) consisting of background research, field investigations, and preparation of this report. The APE for direct effects includes a proposed approximate 10-foot by 10-foot (3-meter by 3-meter) area, and all the immediately adjacent areas. Approximately 0.002 acres (0.0009 hectares) was surveyed for this undertaking This Archaeological Assessment was conducted in order to ascertain whether the proposed undertaking, on the project site, might directly or indirectly affect cultural resources, if any such resources exist. A search of the Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) identified 1 previously recorded archaeological site (9CA19) and 7 previously recorded cultural resource reports (2289, 5792, 5841, 5842, 5846, 5976, and 9417) within a 1-mile background research radius. Report 5846 is located within our APE for direct effects, but no archaeological sites were found. We conclude that the undertaking would not affect any historic or prehistoric archaeological resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Therefore, for archaeological cultural resources, we recommend a finding of No Effect for the undertaking at the project site.
