Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-0000-00(410), Spalding County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)." The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. STP-0000-00( 410) would relocate a portion of CR 507 /Rover-Zettela Road in Spalding County, Georgia. This project was subjected to an archaeological survey in August 200 I by Teresa Lotti (HPD#HP010709-002). Since that time the project has been changed to include a new alignment shift for a portion of CR 507/Rover-Zettela Road. In addition, Bethany Road would be extended onto new location to intersect with the new alignment of CR 507/Rover-Zettela Road. The shift would begin 120 feet east of Bethany Road and terminate 240 feet north of SR 362. The CR 507/Rover-Zettela Road shift would require 100 feet of right-of-way on new location. The Bethany Road extension would require 80 feet of right-of-way on new location. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHW A Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
