Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation is in the beginning stages of project development for this proposed transportation project. In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Department has determined that because of the nature and the scope of this undertaking, the proposed project has the potential to cause effects to historic properties if any such properties exist in the project area. The Department is attempting to identify historic properties already listed in the National Register of Historic Places and any property not already listed that would be considered eligible for listing that are located within the geographic area of potential effects (APE) of the proposed project.

The proposed project would widen and reconstruct Mathis Airport Road from a two-lane undivided rural roadway to a four-lane divided urban section with four 12-foot travel lanes separated by a 20-foot raised median, with 12- foot shoulders on both sides including curb and gutter. Widening would extend from SR 141/Peachtree Parkway to Old Atlanta Road for a total distance of approximately 2.2 miles, and would consist of minor changes in the horizontal and vertical profile to improve the roadway alignment. The existing right-of-way width for Mathis Airport Road varies from 50 to 100 feet; however, the proposed typical section would require a constant right-of-way width of 100 feet for the length of the project. As discussed below, portions of the new roadway near the project termini would occur on new location, requiring additional right-of-way to be purchased.
