Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation has identified the need for improvements to the intersection of Interstate 185 (I-185) at State Route (SR) 22 Spur. The proposed project is to be included in the GDOT Operational Improvement Lump Sum Program within the Office of Traffic Operations.

The I-185 southbound exit ramp to SR 22/Macon Road currently consists of two, left-turn lanes and one right turn lane. SR 22/Macon Road is an eight-lane roadway, three westbound through lanes, three eastbound through lanes, and two left-turn lanes onto the I-185 northbound ramp. The westbound and eastbound lanes are separated by a concrete median. At its intersection with SR 22/Macon Road, I-185’s exit ramp is controlled by a traffic signal at the two left-turn lanes and by a yield sign at the right-turn lane.

The proposed project consists of adding a right-turn lane to the I-185 southbound exit ramp. Currently, the right-turn queue blocks the I-185 southbound exit ramp causing substantial queue length and significant delays at the ramp. The addition of a second turn lane would reduce the right-turn queue. The dual right-turn lanes would be controlled with a signal.

No additional right-of-way (ROW) would be required.
