Abstract

This report details the results of archaeological Phase I survey and Phase II testing for GDOT project BRZLB-15(17), Bartow County, Georgia. The proposed project would construct a bridge on County Road 851, over the Etowah River, on new location just east of the existing structurally deficient bridge. As a result of the Phase I survey, three archaeological resources were located. Site 9Br938 is a prehistoric lithic scatter located just south of the existing bridge and is recommended not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Site 9Br939, also located south of the existing bridge, is a 20th century historic artifact scatter/prehistoric lithic scatter and is recommended not eligible for the NRHP. Previously recorded prehistoric site 9Br34, located on the north side of the existing bridge, was relocated and after Phase II testing was determined eligible for the NRHP. Due to the fact that there are no prudent and feasible design alternatives, Phase III data recovery is recommended for 9Br34. There will also be an adverse effect to the Etowah Valley Historic District as a result of the adverse effect to 9Br34.
