Abstract

New South Associates is pleased to present this Technical Proposal in response to Contract MSL-0001-00(7 48), Task Order 00121 lo provide archaeological data recovery mitigation services at 9Br34 for the County Road 85 l (Hardin's Bridge) bridge over the Etowah River. This proposal has been developed in response to the statement of work provided in the task order as well as the site description and data recovery program described in the report of the site survey and evaluation (Pomfret 2005). Site 9Br34 is located on a second river terrace and levee between two bluff tops. This site was first recorded by Robert Wauchope in 1939 and named the Hardin's Bridge site. Wauchope identified projectile points, pottery, and debitage on the site and classified it as an Archaic and Woodland lithic workshop. Wauchope recommended further work on the site. GDOT Archaeologist Jim Pomfret visited the site in 2005 during survey for the County Road 851 (Hardin's Bridge) replacement. Pomfret excavated a total of 95 shovel tests at a 10-meter (m) interval within the Area of Potential Effect (APE), of which 66 (69%) were positive. These positive tests produced a total of 4,306 artifacts, a density of 65 artifacts per test, which is very high. The majority of these (n=3,80 l) were Knox chert debitage. The distribution of the artifacts showed the highest density where the APE crossed a levee overlooking the Etowah River.
