Phase II Testing at Sites 9HT8 and 9HT37 on Robins Air Force Base, Houston County, Georgia

Abstract

A Phase II archaeological testing investigation was conducted at site 9HT8 from September 21 through Septemper 28, 1992 by Garrow & Associates, Inc. for the United States Air Force. The site is located in the southeastern portion of Robins Air Force Base in Houston County, Georgia. An additional site, 9HT37, was also scheduled for testing. However, due to a mapping error that misrepresented the location of 9HT37 in a previous report (Childress 1991), site 9HT37 was not investigated. Consequently, the status of 9HT37 is unknown. The results of investigations at 9HT8 indicate that this is a multicomponent site that was occupied as early as ca. 5,000 B.C. and continued to be used by Native Americans until approximately A.D. 1600. The site is located on a ridge overlooking wetlands and a swamp. It is approximately 16,000 square meters in area; the heaviest occupation occurred in an area of about 5,000 square meters. Soil profiles and the nature of the vertical artifact distribution indicate that the entire site, with the exception of a 2 m wide bulldozed path, maintains its contextual integrity. A Late Archaic occupation, represented by fiber tempered ceramics and large stemmed hafted bifaces, and a large Middle to Late Woodland occupation, represented by Deptford Check Stamped, Swift Creek Complicated Stamped, and Napier Complicated Stamped ceramics, as well as Hernando hafted bifaces, are the major cultural components at 9HT8. This site is recommended eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
