Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of a proposed Trail corridor north of Darien, McIntosh County, Georgia between November 8 and 11, 1999. The survey corridor extends for approximately 7.1 miles primarily along the east side of SR 99. The corridor passes through "The Ridge" a National Register Historic District where the corridor splits to run along each side of the existing road. The survey located three previously unrecorded archaeological sites, 9Mc393, 9Mc394, and 9Mc395 and one Isolated Find. All the sites date from the early to mid-twentieth century and do not appear to qualify for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Site 9Mc395 is located within "The Ridge" National Register Historic District. Only limited testing was possible at the site, but it does not appear to possess features that would contribute to the understanding of the history of the District. No further work at any of the four sites is recommended.
