Abstract

This report is a botanical assessment and impact statement of the Georgia Bicentennial Forest located in Fulton County, Georgia. The Georgia Bicentennial Forest was started in February 1933 by Atlanta area school children as one of the many activities that took place to commemorate the Bicentennial founding of the state of Georgia. Thereafter, trees were planted annually on Arbor Day to establish “a new garden spot in Georgia in which her most distinguished sons and daughters will be honored by living trees dedicated to ‘them.’” The forest is situated along the north and south banks of Peachtree Creek between Northside Drive and Howell Mill Road and occupies about thirty acres of land. The south side of the Georgia Bicentennial Forest is now incorporated within Atlanta Memorial Park. This ground is also a part of the battlefield of the Battle of Peachtree Creek, which took place during the Civil War. The following conclusions were made after surveying that park of the Georgia Bicentennial Forest which is located in Atlanta Memorial Park. It appears that the proposed Peachtree Creek Relief sewer follows a direct path through Atlanta Memorial Park. Today, the proposed relief sewer will have a much greater impact on the Georgia Bicentennial Forest because the trees are so much larger and cannot be successfully transplanted.
