Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify a transit system concept that will provide a connection across the proposed 17th Street bridge, connecting Midtown to the neighborhoods and developments on the west side of the interstate and the planned Atlantic Steel Redevelopment Project. This includes providing transit service connections between the site and the existing Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Arts Center rail station. The study addresses a short-term bus shuttle system to make this connection and the potential to upgrade the system to light rail technology in the future. More specifically, the study identifies: Proposed bus shuttle route and station/stops, Key operational characteristics of the shuttle system including ridership potential, Shuttle support facilities, Shuttle system management approach, Potential Intelligent Transportation Systems_ (ITS) applications for the shuttle system, Light Rail Transit (LRT) characteristics and right-of-way requirements, An LRT alignment to make the connection from the Atlantic Steel site to the MARTA station, Options for accommodating possible regional LRT alignments that could pass through the Atlantic Steel site.
