Abstract

TRC Garrow Associates was contracted by CH2M HILL to carry out cultural resources investigations on a tract of land, approximately 300 acres in size, associated with the Clayton County water treatment facility in Southern Clayton County, Georgia near Inman. The investigations involved archaeological background research and visits to previously recorded sites within the project area. Documentation of these sites included background research and field investigations to relocate the sites, evaluate their current condition, and update information on their location and boundaries. A survey also was undertaken to document and evaluate historic architecture within the project’s Area of Potential Effects (APE). Additionally, a second tract, located north of the 300-acre tract, was surveyed for historic architecture. No archaeological survey was conducted on the northern tract.

The fieldwork was carried out from June 12 to June 18, 2000, Eleven archaeological sites and two historic structures with associated outbuildings were identified within the APE. Both of the historic structures and five of the archaeological sites were recommended as not eligible for the NRHP. The archaeological sites that we do recommend as potentially eligible for the NRHP include two previously recorded sites, 9NC66 and 9CN70, and four newly discovered sites with are: 9CN113, 9CN114, 9CN116, and 9CN119. We recommend that these six sites be avoided during future construction projects. If they cannot be avoided, then we recommend that archaeological test excavations be carried out to assess their eligibility for the NRHP.
