Abstract

Scott Messer, of the Office of University Architects (OUA), contacted Southeastern Archeological Services (SAS) on the afternoon of June 2, 2017 requesting that we monitor the installation of an electrical duct bank at Clark Howell Hall. The Clark Howell grounds adjoin the ongoing West End Stadium Project and archeologist Joel Jones happened to be on that site on June 2, 2017, and he briefly observed the initial section of the duct bank trench that day. The trench was excavated in sections, the electrical conduit pipes placed on brackets in the trench, and then concrete was poured into the trench to encase the electrical conduit pipes. The duct bank trench was inspected once daily on June 2, 6, 7, and 8, and 12, 2017.

The duct bank trench extends northward about 50 m (160ft) along the east (rear) side of Clark Howell Hall, and then turns northwest, just past the building's northeast corner, where it cuts diagonally across a slope another 40 m (130 ft) to the curb along a parking deck entrance road (Figure 1). The bottom half of the trench was around 75 cm (2.5 ft) wide, but the upper portion of the trench was twice to three times as wide because it had been benched back for safety reasons (Figure 2). The trench was generally around 1 - 1.2 m (3 - 4 ft) deep, though it approached 2 m in depth at the northern end.
