This report presents the results of an intensive archeological survey performed by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. in northeastern Houston County, where the Georgia Transmission Corporation wishes to construct the proposed Waterford 115/12 kV Substation. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate any archeological resources that may be adversely affected by the construction of the substation. The survey was undertaken in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The area of potential effect for the project consists of an approximate 2.2-ha (5.45-ac) tract on the north side of State Route 96, just east of the town of Bonaire. The tract is entirely composed of a fallow, plowed field with good (50 percent) ground surface exposure. The tract was intensively surface inspected on 30-m transects and no cultural material was observed. One shovel test was excavated to observe soil strata. No artifacts or archeological sites were detected on the property. Thus, we conclude that the construction of the proposed Waterford 115/12 kV Substation will have no effect to significant archeological resources and should be granted clearance to proceed.
