Abstract

Cardno, Inc. (Cardno) has completed archaeological and historic resources survey of part of the proposed Dalton Expansion Project, in Georgia. This letter details Cardno's findings and management recommendations specifically for one land parcel, provisionally designated as the Anderson tract (Figure 1). This area was previously inaccessible and was subjected to survey immediately following landowner permission. The results of Cardno's archaeological and historic resources survey for the Anderson tract are described in this document. Following a brief description of the environmental setting, methods used for field survey are described. The results of the archaeological and historic resources survey of the land parcel will then be described, including a review of previously recorded sites within an approximate 1-kilometer (km) radius of the proposed pipe yards. Following this, management recommendations for each surveyed yard will be discussed. Cardno archaeologists completed phase I survey of the Anderson tract in October of 2016. Shovel tests were excavated at approximately 30-m intervals along transects spaced 30 m apart. Shovel tests were not excavated in areas of severe slope, or in areas where streams, wetlands, or other bodies of standing water were present. In addition, only the furthest northeast portion of the tract was surveyed, where the land parcel intersected with the project corridor. Shovel tests were excavated to a maximum depth of 80 cmbs, or until culturally sterile clay subsoil was encountered. All soil was screened through .25-inch hardware fabric and artifacts were collected and kept separate by excavated provenience.
