Abstract

Edwards-Pitman, Inc. (EP) conducted an addendum Phase I archaeological survey in advance of a bridge replacement along County Road (CR) 287/Ebenezer Church Road (Rd) in Fayette County, Georgia (P.I. No. 0008598). This survey was conducted for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) under a contract with Atkins U.S., Inc. Fieldwork for the addendum Phase I survey was completed on July 23, 2020 by EP in accordance with GDOT's Environmental Procedures Manual (GDOT 2013) and Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists (GCPA) standards (GCPA 2019).

The proposed project, located approximately 6.4 kilometers (km) (4 miles [mil) southwest of Fayetteville, Georgia, will replace the bridge (GDOT No. 113-5024-0) over Whitewater Creek. The total length of the project is approximately 204.2 meters (m) (670 feet [ft]), beginning 76.2 m (250 ft) west of the existing bridge and ending 76.2 m (250 ft) east of the existing bridge. The proposed bridge would be built in the same location as the existing bridge, which is 48.8 m (160 ft) long by 9.3 m (30.4 ft) wide. The proposed bridge would be approximately 91.4 m (300 ft) long by 13.2 m (43.3 ft) wide over Whitewater Creek and would be constructed on the existing alignment. The traffic of CR 287 /Ebenezer Church Rd would utilize an off-site detour. Existing right-of-way (ROW) varies in widths from 24.4 to 27.4 m (80 to 90 ft), while proposed ROW varies in widths from 36.6 to 52.9 m (120 to 173.5 ft). The Phase I archaeological survey resulted in the identification of two newly recorded resources, 9FY257 and 9FY258.
