Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., an archeological consulting firm founded in 1983, was asked by Ted Brooke to perform a delineation of an abandoned cemetery in central Carroll County in accordance with Official Code of Georgia Section 36-72-5(2). This code section calls for "a report prepared by an archaeologist stating the number of graves believed to be present and their locations as can be determined from the use of minimally invasive investigation

techniques, including remote sensing methods and the use of metal probes ... ". The cemetery is marked but not labeled on the Georgia Department of Transportation Carroll County road map and the USGS topographic map of the area (Carrollton quadrangle; Figure 1). The cemetery is not known to have an established name and is referred to herein by the names of those buried. The cemetery is located about 3 miles northeast of Carrollton at the south corner of the junction of Old Airport Road and Shady Grove Road (which is labeled as Hickory Level Road on the USGS topographic map). The cemetery is situated in a grassy field on a ridge top (Figure 2). On the day of the delineation, which was November 20, 2003, the cemetery itself was in tall, unmowed grass that obscured four toppled tombstones.

The delineation was conducted by Thomas Gresham, president of Southeastern Archeological Services and a Registered Professional Archaeologist. Gresham has directed the location and delineation of over a dozen cemeteries, as well as the exhumation and relocation of five cemeteries. He was assisted by Ted Brooke, who has years of experience in locating and delineating cemeteries.
