Abstract

This letter report summarizes the Phase I Cultural Resources Survey carried out for the proposed Smarr Warehouse Facility (Figure 1) . The fieldwork took place from March 3-4, 2008 and was conducted by Mr. Jeffrey L. Sherard and Mr. Michael Creswell. The architectural study and discussion was completed by Mr. Joseph Tomberlin. Dr. Thomas G. Whitley served as Principal Investigator for the project. Due to the poor soil conditions encountered within the area of potential effect (APE), the project area was investigated primarily through visual surface inspection of exposed ground surfaces in conjunction with judgmental shovel testing (Figures 2 and 3). All excavated shovel tests (n= 37) produced negative results for cultural material. However, a light surface scatter of historic artifacts was identified within one portion of the property. All archaeological activities were conducted in accordance with state guidelines and standards.
