Abstract

This is a brief report of investigations at an abandoned cemetery in Washington, Georgia. The cemetery is located within a 34-acre tract that is currently owned by Mr. O.A. Denard. The wooded tract is a potential site of a proposed apartment complex for senior citizens. Preliminary plans call for the construction of six single-story buildings that will contain 44 apartments. Specifically, the cemetery is situated in the east-central portion of the property, within a 2.32-acre tract labeled "Parcel C" on a survey plat dated March 30, 2012 (Figures I and 2). Apparently, the cemetery was discovered by land surveyors while they were making a topographic map of the property. The surveyors noted the presence of a 2-ft high brick wall that enclosed an area measuring 12-x-25- ft, typical of a family plot within a cemetery, but it was unclear if additional graves were present. This report addresses that question.
