Abstract

The proposed project is located in Cusseta, Georgia, which is situated in central-west Georgia. The proposed project consists of converting the existing two-way stop-controlled intersection of State Route (SR) 1 at SR 520 into a four-legged, single-lane roundabout. The proposed roundabout would have an inside diameter of approximately 51.2 meters (m) (168 feet [ft]), a 6.1 m (20 ft) wide travel lane within the roundabout, and approach lanes that vary between 3.7 m (12 ft) wide and 6.1 m (20 ft) wide. The design of the roundabout would calm vehicle speeds through the intersection to about 40.2 kilometers per hour (kmh) (25 miles per hour [mph]), and rumble strips would be added to the SR 1 and SR 520 approaches. Existing rumble strips located on the SR 1 northbound approach to the intersection would remain in place. One and a half meter (5 ft) wide sidewalks and a pedestrian cross-walk would be part of the proposed project. The majority of the proposed construction would occur within the existing intersection. Existing right-of-way (ROW) varies from approximately36.6 m (120 ft) to approximately 51.8 m (170 ft) for SR 1, approximately 45.7 m (150 ft) to approximately 48.8 m (160 ft) for SR 1 /SR 520 and SR 520, and approximately 27.4 m (90 ft) to approximately 36.6 m (120 ft) for Wells Street. Minor amounts of ROW would be required from each quadrant of the intersection and would range up to approximately 7.6 m (25 ft) in width.
