Abstract

This report documents results of a cultural resource assessment survey performed by Greenhouse Consultants Incorporated in conjunction with its PaleoWest affiliate of approximately 45 acres in Chatham County, Georgia. The Area of Potential Effects (APE) for this survey comprises 100-meter buffers around four delineated wetland areas within the footprint of proposed development on county parcel IDs 60925 04001, 60925 04004, and 60925 04003 south of Old Louisville Road in Chatham County, GA

(Chatham County Property Appraiser 2022).

The purpose of this survey was to locate and identify historic properties within the APE and to assess the significance of such properties with respect to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria in 36 CFR 60, National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The survey was completed in accordance with federal and state regulations, and it was undertaken to comply with the Georgia Standards and

Guidelines for Archaeological Investigations provided by the Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists (GCPA 2019).

Shovel test pits (STP) were pre-plotted within the APE at 30 meter intervals spaced 30 meters apart, with pedestrian survey transects of low probability areas plotted at a spacing of 90 meters and STP plotted at 90-meter intervals along these transects to confirm expected hydric soil conditions. TheGreenhouse Consultants teamplotted and excavated a total of 47 STP. No STP contained cultural material, and 5 STP were unable to be excavated. Pedestrian survey was conducted along the transects throughout the APE. One newly identified archaeological site was recorded during pedestrian survey.

Site 9CH1556 is a newly documented archaeological site located within the APE. The site consists of a small surface scatter of historic artifacts. The Greenhouse Consultants team documented the resource and recommends that it is not eligible for the NRHP.

This survey established that the undertaking should have no effect on sites eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, the Greenhouse Consultants team recommends no additional archaeological investigation within the APE.
