Abstract

The proposed project would address the need for sidewalks and improved pedestrian accommodations throughout the project corridor. Campbellton Road is a major thoroughfare providing connectivity between residential and commercial areas, as well as access to schools, parks, and churches. The corridor is served by Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) buses, and footpaths can be observed along the roadway in the areas without sidewalks. Within the areas that have existing sidewalks, the sidewalks are often narrow, have no buffers, and ramps that do not meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. The existing roadway consists of two 12-foot (ft) travel lanes with rural graded shoulders from Enon Road to Butner Road. There is existing curb, gutter, and sidewalk in the vicinity of intersections at County Line Road and Niskey Lake Road. The roadway widens to four travel lanes with a flush median and curb and gutter from Butner Road to Comp Ground Road. Lane widths vary from 11 ft (3.35 meters [m]) to 12 ft (3.65 m). Intermittent sidewalks are located largely along the north side of the roadway in this section of the corridor. The proposed project would construct continuous and improved 8-foot sidewalks along both sides of the roadway for approximately 2.1 miles (mi). The existing right-of-way (ROW) varies from 50 ft in the two-lane rural areas to 130 ft in the four lane urban areas, and the proposed ROW will be determined as project plans develop.
