Abstract

The Thompson site (9Go4) is located on the Coosawattee River near Calhoun, Georgia in Gordon County (Figure 1). The site covers two and a half to three hectares. It is bordered by the Coosawattee River to the north, by a small creek that drains into the Coosawattee to the east, and by a slough to the west (Figure 2). Thompson is the site of a large Native American Village with two known occupations: a Woodstock period occupation around A.D. 900 and a Lamar period occupation from about A.D. 1400 to 1600 (Markin 2007). The Thompson site may have been a ceremonial center in the Coosa province (Hally et al. 1990), recorded in the records of Hernando de Soto's expedition in 1540 (Clayton et al. 1994) and Tristan de Luna's expedition in 1560 (Priestley 1928).
