Abstract

9Ge130 is located on a very narrow terrace immediately adjacent to the Oconee River. When originally discovered this site was thought to have a Late Archaic component since several Stallings Island fiber-tempered sherds were found in 2 posthole tests spaced 200 meters apart. This component supposedly occurred at a depth of 60 to 110cm below ground surface. Subsequent testing with a posthole digger failed to produce a single diagnostic Late Archaic artifact, and no cultural material was found as deep as 60 centimeters. A few flakes, ground stone tools, and pottery found in the posthole tests and on the surface suggest that 9Ge130 is about 120 meters long and extends about 40 meters back from the river bank.
