Abstract

9Pm222 is located on a small island at Lawrence Shoals on the Oconee River, west of Weston Reeves Island and approximately one kilometer upstream from the Wallace Dam construction site. The island has been bisected by an erosional cut with the prehistoric occupation being

restricted to the northern part about 20 meters north of the cut (see map, state site survey form, p. 4). This portion of the island is approximately 100 meters long (north-south) by 50 meters wide (east-west). The elevation of the island is relatively high with the crest being about four meters higher than the river channel. A partial inventory of the island flora consisted of dogwood, hickory, holly, sweet gum, laurel, river birch, pine, poison ivy, and yucca. Granite shoals surround the island, a factor which may have influenced the aboriginal choice of site location. The soil consists of a fine to medium alluvial sand. Prior to excavation, Georgia Power clearing contractors had stripped all of the island except for a 50-meter (north-south) by 35 meter (east-west) section at the highest part of the island and containing the site.
