Abstract

In preparation of planning for a active recreational facility, the proposed Newtown Community Park, located in Gold Lot 94, Dist. 1st, 1st Section, North Fulton (original Cherokee) County, Georgia, an intensive archeological investigation was carried out on 34.64 acres of Piedmont upland. The project also included an archeological reconnaissance of possible secondary impact areas adjacent to the property. Four sites were catalogued; three prehistoric lithic sites (9Fu203; 204; 205) were assessed as hunter/gatherer camps during the Middle to Late Archaic Period. Sites 204 and 205 were assessed as components of the same general habitation area, now separated by recent land-use practices. 9Fu206 is identified as a destroyed Pioneer Period (A.D. 1832-1840) log-constructed domestic house, typical of the Georgia Piedmont. All but 9Fu204 are assessed as having potential value to the interpretation of area cultural history. Recommendations are offered that not only affect the present project, but the potential resources of Fulton County as a whole. 9Fu203, partially in the primary impact area, has been specifically recommended for future research on a limited scale.
