Abstract

The U. S. Postal Service is planning the construction of a carrier facility in downtown Atlanta. In compliance with the cultural resources and environmental policy laws, including the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (PLO11-190), an Intensive Cultural Resources Survey was conducted to determine if this construction would adversely impact cultural resources in the project area. The site is located one block south of Interstate 20 and is bordered on the north by Rawson Street; on the east by Central Avenue; on the west by Pryor Street, and to the south by the remainder of the block. No significant cultural resources were discovered during the pedestrian survey. However, the literature a records search indicates that the project area is the site of a Federal intrenchment line from the Civil War Period as well as residential buildings since that time. On the basis of these results recommended prior to construction of the postal facility.
