An Archaeological Survey of a Proposed Sewerage System Improvements for the Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission April, 1976

This report presents the results of an archaeological field survey of proposed sewage line areas in Clarke County, Georgia. The areas investigated include McNutt Creek, Stockade Creek, Cedar Creek, O'Kelly Road, Turkey Creek, and portions of the Middle and North Oconee Rivers. Altogether 28 linear miles of sewage trunk line right-of-way were surveyed. The field investigations were conducted by University of Georgia archaeologists Sharon I. Goad and Rowe Bowen. The field survey required 21 man days to complete and was conducted over a period between March 8 and April 9, 1976. Laboratory analysis and report writing required 17 man days and was accomplished between April 12 and April 28, 1976. Dr. Paul R. Fish and Dr. David J. Hally acted as Co-Principal Investigators for this project.

The survey was funded and this report prepared under the provisions of a contractual agreement between the City of Athens and the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia. As outlined in the agreement specifications (see attached copy in Appendix), the contract stipulates the submission of a final report containing the following: 1) determination, description, and map location of all archaeological sites in the construction areas; 2) an assessment of the potential effect of the proposed construction on the archaeological resources; 3) a suggested program of the measures and estimated costs necessary to adequately mitigate the impact of the construction on the resources; and 4) the determination of the archaeological and historical levels of significance of the sites for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. This information is presented in this report.
