Abstract

A cultural resource survey was conducted by the author on the Pounding Mill Creek timber sale on December 27-29, 1982. The survey covered a total of 580 acres in Compartment 31, including proposed timber sale Stand Nos. 7, 14, 17, 23, 15 and 19 in the Tallulah Ranger District of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Rabun County, Georgia. Pedestrian reconnaissance which included subsurface testing located two aboriginal lithic scatters, three historic house sites, a mill site and three rock piles. Three sites, GA05SO3, GA05S06 and GA05SO9, should be preserved. These sites consist of intact structural remains of historic houses and ancillary buildings located outside of proposed timber sale stands. The remaining sites have been heavily disturbed and are considered ineligible for nomination to the National Register. Based on the findings of this survey, the proposed timber sale stands and adjoining acreage should be cleared from impact to cultural resources.
