Abstract

Over a 12-day period, during the months May and June 1982, the author conducted cultural resource surveys on four proposed dams and a proposed dike system for the Big Cedar Creek Watershed Project for the Soil Conservation Service, Polk County, Georgia. Field reconnaissance which included limited subsurface testing was performed over areas covering maximum pool levels and borrow areas in Dam Nos. 32, 41, 48 and 20 and proposed dike, borrow and channelization locations in the city of Cedartown. A total of 42 sites ranging from Early Archaic (8000-5000 BC) aboriginal sites to middle 20th Century house sites were discovered. Only one site, 9Po(SCS)19, the Pumpkin Pile Creek site deserves further investigation. This site consists of Early to Middle Woodland (1000 BC-AD 7000) components contained within an undisturbed cultural stratum ranging from 15cm to 30cm in depth. A testing/data recovery program to preserve the cultural resources data of the area is recommended and outlined.
