Abstract

An archaeological reconnaissance and inventory was performed at eighteen Government -owned private club lease tract sites located at Clark Hill Lake in Elbert and Columbia County, Georgia and McCormick County, South Carolina. The reconnaissance included a pedestrian survey with limited subsurface testing of the lease sites. The reconnaissance and limited testing program resulted in the location and preliminary identification of eight (8) prehistoric sites and five (5) historic sites. All sites inventoried have been heavily disturbed by either timbering, agriculture, erosion, and recent individual lease site recreational development. Because of the heavily disturbed nature of the cultural resources inventoried it has been determined that they do not appear to meet the criteria for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
