Abstract

Cultural resources survey and evaluation was conducted in the George W. Andrews Lake and Chattahoochee River Project Area, Henry and Houston Counties, Alabama and Early, Clay and Seminole Counties, Georgia, by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, under contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District. From November 1979 to March 1980 fieldwork was conducted, and one hundred eighty-one prehistoric and historic archaeological sites were located. Surface survey and subsurface testing were performed according to a systematic, environmentally and topographically stratified, research design. A literature search provided data on previously known sites in the region, some of which were relocated by our survey. Information collected from the field as well as that gathered from the available literature provided the basis for individual site reports and evaluations. These data were then used to synthesize and expand previous interpretations of cultural chronology and process within the general project area. Sixty sites have been judged to meet the minimal criteria necessary to justify a recommendation of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. Fourteen sites are considered to be potentially eligible (significant data were collected but they were insufficient to meet the necessary criteria) and 107 sites investigated within the project area are not considered eligible. Individual recommendations for all sites and management and preservation recommendations for the significant sites are presented.
