Archaeological Survey of the Proposed McPherson Road Substation

Report Number

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to identify and evaluate the cultural resources located within the area selected by Oglethorpe Power Company for a proposed substation. This area is located on the northwest side of the intersection of Post Oak (Tritt) Road and McPherson Road in Cobb County (Figures 1-3).

The field investigation of the proposed substation site was conducted on March 8, 1984 by Keith Reiner of Garrow & Associates. The survey was conducted on a bright, breezy day, with temperatures that ranged from 50 to 65 degrees. These superb conditions were, no doubt, beneficial to the field effort.

A literature and records search was conducted for the general vicinity of the proposed substation prior to the field investigations. Research pertaining to the history and prehistory-history of the area was conducted at the State Historic Preservation Office, Department of Natural Resources, Atlanta. Additional research was conducted at the State of Georgia Site Files, Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia, Athens. No sites or historic structures were recorded within the project area at either of these facilities. Several sites recorded at the State Historic Preservation Office were apparently not referrenced at the State Site Files; although this may be a reflection of Door organization of material rather than a lack of the site reports. Further information regarding the history of the project area was obtained from Mr. Larry Meier of the Cobb County Archaeological Survey.
