Abstract

The purpose of this project was to perform an archaeological resurvey of site (GSU) 9DaI39, which had originally been identified in 1979. The goals of the resurvey were to more precisely delineate the boundaries of the site, and to assess the site contents. The site - which is located in southwestern DeKalb County, Georgia - is a well preserved soapstone quarry that constitutes an outlier to the main Soapstone Ridge complex. Careful analysis of the site and its contents indicated that it is a significant archaeological resource, and the report recommends a data recovery program prior to planned construction. A second site, which was missed during the 1979 survey, was located during the resurvey. That site consists of four stone mounds which appear to be prehistoric in age. The report recommends archaeological testing of the stone mounds so that their archaeological significance can be determined.
