Abstract

An intensive archaeological survey was conducted along the southern edges of the Frohock Point Prehistoric Site (9CAM184) and the Mallard Creek Site (9CAM185), two adjacent multi-component prehistoric sites on the Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, Georgia. The purpose of the survey was to better delineate the southern boundary of each site. Grid coordinates were re-established from earlier secondary testing projects (Smith, Council and Saunders 1985), and a series of 50x50 cm test units systematically excavated south of each site's original southern boundary. Results at the Mallard Creek Site indicated the south boundary should be extended twenty meters. Test units at the Frohock Point Prehistoric Site recovered pockets of prehistoric ceramics and shell south to Rayburn Road, and sixty meters south of the road in the southwest corner of the site. Recommendations were to extend the south boundary of the site to include these sections. A series of 50x50 cm tests was also excavated along a proposed hiking trail on the north boundary of the Frohock Point Prehistoric Site. Tests yielded just three relatively small areas containing light to moderate prehistoric midden, protected by a thick layer of duff and humus. Only one 5xlO meter area along the trail exhibited a shell midden exposed at the surface. Clearance was recommended for foot traffic along the trail, provided the protective duff/humus layer was left in place and the trail be diverted around the single exposed shell midden.
