Abstract

Lands scheduled to be impacted by the City of St. Marys, Georgia, for development of a civic center were subjected to an intensive archaeological survey in May 1985. Surface reconnaissance and systematic subsurface testing resulted in the location of two presumed shed debris areas and a former city dump, all containing modern trash. The only early historic artifacts were two pearlware dish fragments recovered in the northwest corner of the study area; they were found mixed with modern rubbish however and were considered archaeologically insignificant. No prehistoric artifacts were recovered. The results of survey testing indicated insufficient archaeological material within the study area to warrant further investigation. No archaeological preservation or additional evaluation is recommended for the property, and it is considered ineligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. We recommend clearance for the subject property.
