Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted by the authors prior to a proposed land exchange involving 1245 acres of National Forest land in Oglethorpe County, in the Georgia Piedmont. It had been intensively farmed and eroded in the past century and forested in pines and mixed hardwoods since the 1930's, with some logging during the latter period. A total of 13 sites were found, eight of which were prehistoric and five were from the historic period. One prehistoric site at first appeared to have sufficient in-situ data to warrant recommending protection and possible National Register nomination. However, a series of test squares placed on the site by the authors showed that the entire area had been disturbed by subsequent farming and logging operations. All of the cultural remains appeared to be restricted to the plow zone, with no undisturbed subsurface features. No further investigation is warranted on this parcel. Thus the entire tract is recommended for cultural resources clearance.
